One day, a junior from college approached me with a sparkle in her eyes and dreams of diving into the vast world of UI/UX design. “Welcome to the hood,” I exclaimed, knowing firsthand the incredible journey that awaited her. “It is a great career, a canvas for creativity, and a realm I adore for its vibrant interactions and the juxtaposition of tiny humans using colossal machines.
Reflecting on that moment transported me back to my early days, not more than two years ago, when I, too, was navigating the complex terrain of design. Stuck, overwhelmed, and overflowing with an endless of emotions — emotions many in the creative field can relate to. Yet, that conversation with my junior served as a heartfelt reminder of the progress I’ve made.
In a circle that constantly emphasized self-improvement, pushing boundaries, and aspiring for growth, I found the momentum to pursue my dream career. I fell in love with design — the colors, the interactions, the sheer magic of translating ideas into visual experiences.
Addressing her concerns about landing an internship swiftly, I recalled advice from a wise mentor: “Don’t rush into your career; study first. Expertise takes time.” Now, those words resonate profoundly. Patience became my ally on this journey.
When she asked for advice, I couldn’t help but share the lessons I wish I had known earlier. I emphasized the importance of comprehending the fundamentals, embracing the simplicity inherent in design, delving into its essence, and recognizing its indispensable role. I reassured her: ‘Don’t worry and don’t hurry; learning is a continuous process. You will acquire knowledge as time unfolds. The challenges may seem daunting now, but I have crossed that phase myself. It was what I needed to hear at her stage, a signal of guidance to prevent her from facing the hurdles I once did.
To simplify my message, I’d highlight the need to be a curious thinker and researcher. Start a journey of self-discovery, solve problems before they appear — because, at the core, designers are fantastic problem solvers.
So, to all the newbies stepping into the world of UI/UX design, take it slow, be patient, and remember: Your journey is uniquely yours. Embrace the learning process, stay curious, and one day, you’ll find yourself not just navigating but shaping the vibrant landscape of design.
